The North Dakota Department of Agriculture is seeking a Meat Inspection Manager. Our mission is to serve, advocate, protect and promote agriculture to benefit everyone. This includes planning, organizing, coordinating and adapting the full range of meat and poultry inspection operations in slaughter and/or processing establishments. In addition, serves as the team leader who works with and supervises other public health professionals to ensure establishments under NDDA jurisdiction comply with sanitation standards and properly implement systems that control hazards from entering the food supply. To set goals and objectives, directs program budgets, supervises management, technical and field staff, measures results and evaluates effectiveness.Leads the North Dakota State Meat & Poultry Inspection Program, overseeing planning, organizing, and coordinating all meat and poultry inspection operations in slaughter and processing facilities.Provide recommendations for the development of legislation and rulemaking and establishes policies for the program's operations.Work closely with local, state, and federal agencies to enhance program effectiveness.Provide consultation and representation to public, professional, and governmental groups on program-related matters.Manages state compliance professionals to ensure establishments meet sanitation standards and prevent food safety hazards.This position reports to the Grain and Livestock Division Director but supports the Commissioner in collaboration with the Grain and Livestock Division. Due to the need for frequent on-site presence, this position is located in Bismarck at the State Capitol building.Minimum Qualifications:A bachelor's degree in agriculture, biological sciences, food science, animal science, environmental health, or a related field, and four (4) years of professional experience in meat and poultry operations at slaughter and/or processing establishments, food preparation facilities, or dairy facilities.Experience in a leadership role, including staff supervision, overseeing daily tasks, managing performance, providing training, and ensuring overall workflow efficiency.Knowledge of program administration.Strong understanding of the regulatory systems within the meat processing industry.Effective communication skills (verbal, written, presentations).A valid class D driver's license for in-state travel to conduct program oversight.Ability to travel in-state and out-of-state is required as requested training or program meetings.Requires some overnight and weekend travel to conduct the responsibilities of this position.Knowledge and skill to develop written reports and ability to report findings. Preferred Qualifications:Working knowledge of state and federal Meat Inspection Act, public health codes and regulations pertaining to meat and food inspection.Understanding the principles of sanitation and sanitary standards as mandated by state and/or federal laws, rules, and regulations.Knowledge of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures (SSOP). You will also support the North Dakota Hunger Free Garden Project, working to address hunger in the state through local food initiatives. In addition, you will oversee the Produce Safety Program, offering education and technical assistance to fruit and vegetable growers in North Dakota on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule.Oversee the administration and management of grants and contracts.Manage and update an online directory for local food resources.Coordinate and manage social media efforts for assigned programs.Create educational materials to support the local foods initiative in classrooms.Promote the Hunger Free ND Garden project.Advocate for local food systems and farmers market programs statewide.Assist in statewide promotion of the Ag in the Classroom program.Represent the Department in related committees and associations.Provide Produce Safety training for produce growers.Complete the Produce Safety Alliance Trainer course within one year of employment.Supporting other Business, Marketing, and Information programs or duties as assigned.This position reports to the Business, Marketing, and Information Division Director but supports the Commissioner in collaboration with the Business, Marketing, and Information Division.
