About Northern Prairie Human Service ZoneThe North Dakota Department of Health & Human Services, the North Dakota Association of Counties and local social services leaders worked together with the support of Gov. Doug Burgum and state lawmakers to redesign social services to better serve North Dakotans and deliver effective services in a more efficient way. That redesign was implemented in January 2020 when the 46 individual county social service agencies became 19 Human Service Zones. These Human Service Zones serve as the first point of contact for people who need access to the foundations of well-being - economic, behavioral and physical health services. Through the Human Service Zones, North Dakotans now have the ability to go to any social service office and receive the same quality services across the state. Northern Prairie Human Service Zone's name was derived to capture the North Central location of North Dakota and the land that it encompasses. The unique area is covered with prairie ~ mostly devoted to agriculture, wooded hills, and lakes, all within a few miles. Northern Prairie includes the counties of Bottineau, McHenry, and Pierce. The counties allow for small town living with Bottineau and Pierce counties having an array of local shops and big-name franchise stores. Bottineau is known as the four-season playground, offering lake time fun at Lake Metigoshe and other surrounding lakes, snowmobiling, cross country skiing and the Bottineau Winter Park for downhill skiing and tubbing. The four seasons create a sense of beauty all year round. Within the Northern Prairie Zone area, you can visit landmarks such as the Geographic Center of North America in Rugby, ND or drive the scenic route through the Turtle Mountains to visit Mystical Horizons where one can view summer and winter solstice and the equinox through the stone and cement designed structures. This area is truly for everyone with golf courses, local schools, clinics, and hospitals as well as nursing homes and assisted living facilities. While in the area, be sure you visit the International Peace Gardens which sits on the border of Canada and the United States and includes nearly 2400 acres of indoor and outdoor gardens, displays, hiking trails, scenic drives, and a museum. The Northern Prairie HSZ governance board is comprised of engaged county commissioners and community leaders.
